I recently bought a BMW which was pre-owned certified, but still has the balance of factory warranty left. During BMWs factory warrany period, all routine maintenance is performed free of charge, so I have those records. The factory warranty has just ran out, but the pre-owned warranty (I think 5 years/100,000 miles, bumper to bumper) has kicked in. If something goes wrong, do I need to have proof that the maintenance was done up to that point? Or only if maintenance is relative to the failure?

Don’t fool around with warranties, YES. Make a folder today and all maintenance records keep them in it.
I have a customer that has a Mini and their service is at 10K but the customer has his oil and car serviced by my shop every 4K, he is required to take it in to the Mini/BMW dealer for their service or the warranty is void should something go wrong. It is their way of not honoring the 100K warranty….Nice Huh!

Service records include tire purchases and alignments, even if you buy a bulb fo the headlight, toss it in.
Check your specific warranty for things that void it and make sure you have record of them.

    pre-owned warranties do not cover bumper to bumper.

    The car is obviously older or the manufacturer warantee would still be in effect.

    Extent your warranty at the dealership.

    And yes keep all your service records.

    Better to hang on to the paperwork. You have more leverage over lip-service.
